This week was the first week of actual modeling, and I spent it testing different methods/styles of designing my buildings for my apocalypse scene. First I had to set my project folder, set my measurements to feet, and generally prepare Maya for the project. After this, I began going over my reference material and attempting recreations, to no avail. Although I could create something somewhat close to my original vision, I was in need of help. After some time, I found a video on Youtube which used python to create their buildings, and although I didn't use this method, there were a few other techniques in the video which were incredibly helpful, and assisted me in creating the picture you see below.

I still need to create the fire escape on the building on the right and add a bit more detail to both buildings, but so far they are fitting my vision. In the aforementioned video, I noticed the author creating four bricks on the corner of the building, then duplicating them directly upwards to create corner accents. I found this method fascinating, and replicated it to create the image below. I'm happy with how it turned out, and am even more happy I have learned this skill for the future. I originally planned to include more bevels on these corner pieces, but I decided to use a simple bevel to round off the edges for now, knowing I could recreate these assets with whatever shape I please in the future.

Next week, I plan to polish these buildings, construct two new ones to be placed on the other side of the street, and begin UVing all of the building models. I am planning for much of the detail on these models to be shown through texturing, and I'm hoping to make the windows reflective on the buildings. I will also soon begin texturing the floors of my scene, which I plan to be a simple plane, slightly modified and textured to resemble a street.
