On The Edge Assignment
In this assignment, we were tasked with creating an aesthetically appealing photograph with the subject framed according to the assignment restrictions: the subject had to be near one of the edges of the frame. We were then to use the remaining space to create weight and eye movement.
For this assignment, I was supposed to learn how to frame a subject properly. This assignment was also a project in which we were to learn how to use certain Photoshop layers such as .
The intended composition of my scene included the white plant as the subject, with the wood chips as the foreground, the bricks as a background, and the miscellaneous other items such as the bikes and the tree as the background.
I used the white color of the subject to help it pop after I applied the black and white layer through Photoshop. I also used the curve of the sidewalk to guide the eye away from the subject to inspect the background.
The focal point of my image was the white plant. I decided to make the plant the focal point because it stood out a lot from its surroundings. I noticed the frame worked well while I was resting for a moment, and decided to take my chance.
I feel that I achieved my goal of directing the viewer's eye to the focal point using color and curves.
My biggest problem during this process was attempting to find a subject which worked with my intended composition while also fitting the assignment requirements.
In Photoshop, I used a Black/White layer to remove color from the background and the subject. I used this because it was one of the lab requirements that day. I also used a Brightness/Contrast layer to accentuate small details throughout the composition.
