Tiling Assignment

Original Image

For this assignment, I was tasked with taking a photograph provided to me and converting it into both a tileable image and a 3D map which could be used in Unity. I was tasked with taking the textures of the stone and the small plants and making them into 3D textures which would render inside of unity in real-time, as well as making sure the image was completely seamless when tiled.

My intended composition for this particular assignment was a rocky landscape, with small objects and larger objects to make the ground feel realistic and uneven.

Final Image

The compositional elements I used in this assignment mainly include the different lines created by the rocks and pebbles to guide the eye, the required textures of the image with variation to create depth, and some mixed in color, such as the lighter stones or the plants scattered about.

The focal point of the image was the large rocks above the center of the image. They stood out well, and made the viewer look around for similar objects, which would guide them around the image.
I feel that I succeeded in guiding the viewer's eye to the focal point due to the amount of contrast the focal point carries.

I did not run into any camera issues with this project, since the pictures were provided to me. The only issue I ran into has to do with the pictures I chose. My first image selected from the images available was proving difficult to make seamless, so I decided to try a new image instead. This worked perfectly, and lead me to the success I was looking for.

I used the different techniques displayed in the tutorial for the assignment, with no additional touches being added.

Hyper-Realism

Source Images (Foreground, Background)

For this assignment, I was tasked with taking two or more images and combining them somehow to create a new, visually compelling image. More specifically, I was tasked with using compositing to create a sense of Hyper-realism.

For this scene, my intended composition consisted of my sister and my garage door. I intended to create an effect which looked like my sister was woven into the door. I achieved this through the lines and shapes naturally present in the garage door.

Final Image

The focal point of the image is my sister. She was meant to represent how, when the picture was taken, we felt stuck at home, unable to leave no matter the circumstances. I feel I drew the viewer's eye very well, as my sister contrasts heavily with the given background.

The main issue I ran into was dealing with the lack of a tripod. My sister had ordered one to use, but it would not arrive in time for the use in this assignment. This meant that to get my source images, I had to take a picture of my sister as seen in the above source image, then attempt to stay perfectly still while having her move out of the way quickly, then getting a picture of the background alone from the same angle. I was lucky, and was able to achieve this on the third try.

I used a layer mask on the background layer, to make it appear on top of certain areas on my sister. I also used an exposure adjustment layer which was a child of the background layer, since the lighting was off and needed a small touch up. I'm very happy with how these adjustments affected my piece, and am proud of my piece overall.
